The Goonies - Donation Bonus

It seemed in 1985 every young man wanted to be a Goonie.  Directed by Superman's Richard Donner, this Stephen Spielberg produced adventure took from the Indiana Jones formula but starred a group of young teens instead of Harrison Ford.  Mikey, Mouth, Chunk, and Data out to find One Eyed Willie's treasure and save their houses from foreclosure--if the evil Fratelli family doesn't kill them first!  This film was a favorite of some Now Playing hosts in the 80s, but does it hold up today or did they just have their bully blinders on?  Donate to Now Playing to find out!

Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park - Donation Bonus

Kiss was unstoppable in the 1970s.  Sold out concerts, action figures, comic books, and a Kiss Army that spanned the world.  They were metal's answer to The Beatles, so it just makes sense to make them stars of a movie, right?  Turning the rockers into superheroes, Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park stunned audiences when it aired as an NBC movie of the week...but perhaps for the wrong reasons.  With this special "Easter Egg" review from Now Playing you can listen to find out why!

Jupiter Ascending - Donation Bonus

In Jupiter Ascending, the newest film directed by The Wachowskis, a woman finds out the ordinary life that bores her so is just an illusion and that she is actually a reincarnated queen.  From that plot and the trailers this new sci-fi epic appeared to tell a story not too far removed from The Wachowski's beloved film The Matrix.  Yet the film sat unreleased for some time, and then its release date was moved from Summer, 2014 to February, 2015--a sign that the studio lacked confidence in the film.  But now Jupiter has ascended.  Should you take the red pill or the blue pill on this new mythology?  Thanks to your donation to Now Playing  you can listen to Stuart, Arnie, and Jakob's review and find out!

Speed Racer - Donation Bonus

After completing their R-rated Matrix trilogy the Wachowski Brothers sought to make a film suitable for a wider audience. They choose to make the big screen adaptation of the Japanese anime show Speed Racer. The film had broken down in development hell for over a decade, but with the Wachowskis in the driver's seat the film went on the fast-track. But the film stalled right out of the gate. Did this movie deserve its fate, or should it get a jump start on home video? The answer is found in this bonus podcast for Now Playing donors! So to hear it, as well as our Matrix reviews, Donate to Now Playing to find out! Go, Now Playing, go!

Zardoz - Donation Bonus

The gun is good!  This movie is bad!  It's Zardoz!  From the director of Deliverance and starring Sean Connery, the most iconic James Bond, comes what is widely considered one of the worst films of all time.  Attempting to be a modern update of 2001, with a tinge of The Wizard of Oz, it's a psychedelic trip in a floating head.  But is it a trip you should take?  Thanks to your donation, well above and beyond even the gold level donation, you can listen to find out!

Lifeforce - Donation Bonus

Tobe Hooper was riding high from the success of Poltergeist when he signed a three picture deal with Cannon Films.  Then came Lifeforce.  It should have been a smash hit--an effects heavy event film from the director of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and the writer of Alien.  Instead it was a notorious flop that would begin Cannon Films' bankruptcy and hamstring production of Superman IV.  How did such a bomb get made, and is the film really that bad?  As a donor you can listen and find out!

Prince of Darkness - Donation Bonus

Master of horror John Carpenter brought us the modern slasher film with Halloween, and arguably the best alien invasion film with The Thing, but in the late 80's the horror director brought us zombified homeless people and Satan in a bottle!  In Prince of Darkness, a trippy, apocalyptic story, scientists and priests team up to try to stop the end of the world, guided by a voice from the future.  Is this another Carpenter masterpiece, or should this genie stay in his bottle?  Listen to find out!

The Garbage Pail Kids Movie - Donation Bonus

In Spring, 2012 we reviewed E.T. as part of our donation drive.  It only made sense that for our Easter Egg podcast we review a movie that tried to capture Steven Spielberg's magic -- The Garbage Pail Kids Movie!  Our hosts collected the cards but did they like the movie, or throw it in the pail? Now as part of Now Playing's celebrating 10 years of podcasting you can donate and find out!

Deep Blue Sea - Donation Bonus

Originally Released April 22, 2011

Arnie, Stuart, and Brock go back into open water for one last shark tale--Deep Blue Sea, a bonus addendum to our Jaws retrospective series. Ostensibly based on an unused plot for Jaws 5 based on Richard Dreyfuss' Matt Hooper at the Aurora station, the film as made stars LL Cool J and Thomas Jane squaring off against genetically altered "smart sharks". With such a B-movie plot and directed by Renny Harlin, has Now Playing's Jaws series sunk to new depths after Jaws: The Revenge? Donate to Now Playing to find out!
